New York October 11:
On October 11, five years and one month after September 11, New York Yankees Pitcher Cory Lidle and his flight instructor Tyler Stanger accidentally crash-landed their Cirrus SR-20 single-engine plane. They took off from Teterboro Airport in suburban New Jersey, and crashed into the 30th and 31st floors of the Belaire, a luxury high-rise condo building in Manhattan on the Upper East Side. Cory and Tyler were the only two people to die, and it isn't believed to be terrorist related, but U.S. military jets briefly patrolled the skies above several American cities just in case. This accident reminded New Yorkers of an earlier more tragic time. But this time co-operation was in order as NORAD scrambled the jets, the NTSB investigated the accident, and the FAA researched a possible mayday call maybe made just prior to the crash.
